How to write a message that produces a great personalized song gift

The biggest reason a GiftSong turns out generic is that the input message is generic. "Happy birthday, have a great day" produces bland lyrics. "Sarah, 40 years old, we met at the ramen shop on 2nd Avenue in 2010" produces specific, recognizable lyrics. This guide covers the exact framework for writing good input messages, plus ready-to-use templates for 10 occasions.

The 5-sentence framework

The strongest input messages follow this structure. You don't need to hit every element — but the more boxes you check, the more specific the lyrics.

  1. Who the song is for. Name, nickname, or relationship. ("For Maya, my wife of 10 years.")
  2. What makes them specifically them. One concrete detail — a habit, a trait, a way they do something. ("The way you hum when you're reading.")
  3. A specific memory or moment. Not "we've had many good times." Instead: "The morning we missed the train in Paris and ate croissants on the platform."
  4. Why you're sending this specifically now. Context adds weight. ("On your 40th, I wanted to say what I don't say enough.")
  5. A feeling or hope. The emotional note to land on.

A 5-sentence message following this framework consistently produces lyrics that feel custom. A 1-sentence message ("happy birthday") produces generic lyrics.

What GiftSong's lyric engine does with your input

Your message is not literally the lyrics. The lyric model rewrites your input into verses and a chorus — it rhymes where helpful, compresses for musical rhythm, and repeats key motifs. But it works from your specifics. Names, dates, places, inside references — all get woven into the verses.

This means: specificity in your message is rewarded. The lyric engine cannot invent specifics. If you don't mention the Paris croissants, they won't appear in the song.

10 occasion templates (copy, fill, generate)

1. Birthday

"For [name], turning [age]. [Specific trait or habit]. [Specific shared memory]. I wanted to say [feeling] on your [milestone/normal] birthday."

Example: "For Diana, turning 40. The way you laugh at your own jokes before they're done. The night we got locked out of your apartment in 2019 and stayed up on the stoop until 3 AM. I wanted to say that 40 looks so good on you and I'm glad I've been along for most of it." See Birthday songs.

2. Anniversary

"For [partner name], [X] years together. [Specific place or moment from early days]. [Where we are now]. [Hope for what's next]."

Example: "For Marcus, 15 years together. From that terrible apartment on Franklin Street to the house with the red door. Still your favorite decision you ever made. Here's to 15 more." See Anniversary songs.

3. Wedding

"For [couple names] on their wedding day. [How they met / first moment]. [What I knew about them]. [Wish for their marriage]."

Example: "For Priya and Alex on their wedding day. From the Brooklyn bookstore where they met in 2021 to today. I knew the first time I saw them together. Wishing you a life as good as the story so far." See Wedding songs.

4. Mother's Day

"For Mom, [X] year doing [something]. [Specific routine or habit she did]. [How that shaped me]. [What I want her to know]."

Example: "For Mom, 40 years of packing turkey sandwiches with the crust cut off. I still cut the crust off my kids' sandwiches because of you. Everything I know about taking care of people, I learned from you." See Mother's Day songs.

5. Father's Day

"For Dad, who taught me [specific thing]. [Setting where the lessons happened]. [Now-adult appreciation]. [Brief honest feeling]."

Example: "For Dad, who taught me how to change a tire, read a map, and stop shouting at other drivers. The long road trips to the lake house. I get it now. Thanks for being the steady one." See Father's Day songs.

6. Love note (just because)

"For [partner]. [Specific observation from this week]. [Why that small thing matters]. [Unrushed feeling]."

Example: "For Elena. You brought me coffee on Tuesday without being asked. That small thing is why ordinary days with you feel important. No reason for this song — just because you deserve it on a Tuesday." See Love note songs.

7. Apology

"For [name]. I was wrong about [specific thing]. [What I understand now that I didn't]. [What I want to do next]."

Example: "For Maya. I was wrong on Saturday when I said you were overreacting. I wasn't listening; I was defending. I'm sorry. I want to try again, and I'll do better this time." See Apology songs.

8. Baby lullaby

"For [baby name]. [A promise]. [A detail from the everyday]. [Soothing repetition]."

Example: "For Luna. We promise to always be your safe place. Goodnight to the little toes, goodnight to the little hands. The stars are out and we are here." See Baby lullaby songs.

9. Graduation

"For [name], [what they just finished]. [The hard parts of getting here]. [What's next]. [Proud moment]."

Example: "For Sam, who just finished nursing school. Every 5 AM shift, every test you thought you'd fail, every time you almost quit. You did it anyway. First day on the floor is next Monday. We are so proud." See Graduation songs.

10. Friendship (non-occasion)

"For [friend]. [Length of friendship]. [One running joke or shared history]. [Why you're sending this right now]."

Example: "For Jess. 15 years of bad haircuts and worse roommates. No one else would drive 10 hours for mediocre tacos with me. Just checking in. Miss you." See Friendship songs.

What to do if the first version doesn't land

If you hit Generate and the result feels off: first, check whether your input was specific enough. If yes, you can:

  1. Regenerate with the same input — the model will produce a different version.
  2. Edit the draft lyrics line-by-line before final generation (GiftSong lets you tweak before synthesis).
  3. Add more specific details to your message and regenerate.

Most users land a version they love within the first 2–3 regenerations.
